How to Escape the Trap of Busyness with Vision and Rhythms
Feb 27, 2025We live in a world that wears busyness like a badge of honor. Being busy is celebrated—proof that you’re important, successful, and making things happen. But if we’re honest, most of us are too busy.
Here’s the hard truth: busyness isn’t a sign of success; it’s often a sign that we’ve lost sight of what matters most. We think being busy will make us better, stronger, or more productive, but it’s often the exact opposite of what we truly want.
I’ve been there. I’ve lived a life of calm, peace, and intentionality. But I’ve also found myself slipping back into busyness at times, and I’ve seen firsthand how dangerous it can be. It steals your focus, robs your relationships, and leaves you with a life that looks full but feels empty.
But here’s the good news: you don’t have to stay stuck. The antidote to busyness isn’t more productivity hacks or better time management. It’s having a vision for something different—and building rhythms that help you live it out.
Vision: The Key to Breaking Free from Busyness
If you don’t know what you want, how can you expect to change? It’s not enough to know you don’t want to be busy. You need a clear picture of what you do want instead.
Here’s what I’ve learned: A clear vision is what sets you free from the trap of busyness.
Ask yourself:
- What does a successful life look like to me?
- How do I want my days to feel?
- What kind of relationship do I want with my spouse, kids, and friends?
- How do I want to spend my time?
When you have a vision, you can be intentional. You can make decisions that move you toward the life you truly want. But without it, you’ll always default to busyness because it feels productive—even when it’s not.
Rhythms: The Secret to Intentional Living
Once you have a clear vision, the next step is to build rhythms—habits and practices that support that vision. These rhythms create structure and help you live intentionally every day.
They’re like the guardrails that keep you from drifting back into busyness.
Here’s how it works:
- If your vision is to be a present, engaged parent, your rhythm might be daily family dinners or unplugging from work in the evenings.
- If your vision is to live a peaceful, unhurried life, your rhythm might be blocking out time for rest, reflection, and recreation.
- If your vision is to build a thriving business that doesn’t consume your life, your rhythm might include setting clear work boundaries or scheduling regular planning days to focus on the big picture.
These rhythms don’t add more to your plate; they help you focus on what matters most.
Do You Really Like Being Busy?
If you’re thinking, “But I like being busy,” let me ask you a tough question: Have you asked your kids if they like you being busy?
Most of the time, people who claim they love being busy don’t actually love it—they just don’t know what life looks like without it.
I get it. Slowing down can be scary. Busyness can feel like the only way to prove your worth or stay relevant. But I’ve learned that the greatest peace and success come from living intentionally—not from working harder or filling every minute of your day.
Vision and Rhythms: The Two Essentials for Success in Life and Business
If you want to truly succeed—in both life and business—you need two things: vision and rhythms. Without vision, you’ll always get caught in busyness. Without rhythms, you’ll never move toward your vision. But when you have both, everything changes.
You wake up each day with clarity and purpose. You make decisions that align with your values and move you toward your goals. You create space for what matters most—faith, family, rest, and joy.
And that’s where real success is found.
